Growing for Good

Growing Smarter. Thinking Further.

Innovation that makes a difference.

At Tasman Bay Berries, we're always looking for better ways to do things. From the way we manage our soil and water to how we harvest, handle and process our fruit, we're investing in practical improvements that make our operation more efficient and help us use our resources more responsibly.

For us, sustainability isn't about making big promises. It's about making thoughtful decisions, embracing new technology and continually improving the way we work.

Smarter Growing Starts with Better Information

Healthy soil and careful water management are fundamental to growing quality fruit. We're continually improving our soil management practices, supported by specialist agronomy advice and new technology.

We've introduced CropX soil monitoring technology, which gives us valuable information about moisture levels and helps guide our irrigation decisions. Combining this data with practical growing experience allows us to respond more precisely to the needs of our crops.

Improving the Way We Harvest

We've invested in rebuilding two of our harvesting machines to improve reliability and efficiency, alongside introducing reusable, food-grade Dolav harvest bins supplied by Stowers New Zealand (opens in a new tab).

These improvements help us manage our harvest more effectively while reducing our reliance on disposable materials. They're part of our ongoing approach to making every stage of our operation work better.

HARVESTFLOW™ – Our Digital Harvest Platform

We've also developed HARVESTFLOW™, our own digital harvest management and traceability platform, in collaboration with technology partner Tryzent.

The system brings together real-time weight recording, QR-based traceability, harvest reporting and operational information, giving us a clearer picture of what's happening throughout the harvest.

It's helping us improve accuracy, simplify reporting and make better-informed decisions.

Better Packaging, Less Waste

We're working with specialist packaging partners to improve how our fruit is protected and presented while making more responsible choices about materials.

This includes recycled and recyclable fresh produce packaging developed with PACT Group New Zealand (opens in a new tab), alongside moisture-management solutions from Sirane (opens in a new tab). These improvements are part of our commitment to reducing unnecessary waste and continually reviewing how our packaging performs.

Making More of What We Grow

One of our longer-term goals is to find valuable uses for more of the fruit we produce.

We're exploring new processing opportunities and applications for different parts of the boysenberry, working towards a more circular approach where less is wasted and more of the harvest can be put to good use.

Our ambition is to work towards zero waste, and we know that achieving it will take continued innovation, investment and collaboration.

Always Looking Ahead

We don't see sustainability as a finished project. It's something we work on every season, finding opportunities to improve, trying new ideas and investing in solutions that make a genuine difference.

Better decisions today. A more sustainable future tomorrow.
